Cheers getting into the swing of things for charity

This is the third year of the event and the organisers are looking forward to a big turn-out of teams to compete for the JT Autos trophy for men and the CHEERS Bowl, the ladies trophy.

A number of local businesses have once again shown their support for the event and the work of CHEERS by providing sponsorship and a variety of prizes to make the event an attractive competition to local golfers.

Gracehill GC is reckoned to be one of Northern Ireland’s top parkland courses and tests the skill and resolve of even the best players and the organisers are indebted to the club owners and committee for making the course available and assisting with the event.

CHEERS Youth Centre is celebrating twenty years of work with young people in the town this year having opened its doors in the old Ballymoney United social club in Victoria Street in 1991.

The work has expanded and provides focussed projects for young people as well as a recreational, social and counselling service.

The centre also receives financial support from voluntary contributions, churches, the NEELB and a number of grant awarding bodies but John Scott who manages the centre with his wife Margaret is grateful for the hard work of the fund raising group co-ordinated by Stephen Currie.

“Without the work of the group a lot of CHEERS work would be impossible,” he said.

“We have a great youth facility in the Ballymoney which is the envy of many other NI towns and we want to ensure it goes from strength to strength.”

Steven is hoping for a big turn out on July 1: “It is always encouraging when a lot of hard work goes into organising an event like this that local golfers support the effort and have a good days competition as well.

“We want to thank local businesses who have sponsored holes; without their support we couldn’t run such an event successfully.”
