Chris proves a Worthy winner at Raceview

No-one, however, could surpass the 43-point total set by 22-handicapper Chris Worthington, who had teed off at 6:56am.

Chris didn’t have the desired start, dropping two shots at the opening hole and a further shot at the second but he quickly got the latter back with a birdie at the third.

The remaining six holes produced three bogeys, two pars and double bogey as he reached the turn in 21 points.

He added a further 22 points to that total from a second nine of four pars, three bogeys and a double bogey.

One point behind Worthington came Steven Smyth (4) whose opening nine of 33 strokes included three birdies and he repeated that shots total on the homeward stretch by playing the second nine holes in level par, 33 shots.

Third nett was Mervyn Wallace (17) who returned a total of 40 points, 21 of which came on the opening nine holes.

Fourth nett went to Gary McMullan (25) with the best of three 39-point totals, 22 of which came on the second nine, including a very rewarding birdie worth four points.

That proved important as it enabled us to have a better second nine total than Seamus O’Boyle (16) - another early monring starter - and John Mcfadden (26), who had to settle for sixth position.

The best gross card came from Sean McElroy, playing off a six handicap, who played the course in one over par.

Sean’s front nine of eight pars plus a birdie was added to on the back nine with five pars, three bogeys and a birdie.

SUNDAY OPEN

The Sunday open stableford was won by Eugene M Reid (20) with an overall total of 41 points, of which 22 came from the second nine holes.

Second prize was taken by Crawford Logan (17) with a total of 40 points.

He had a birdie worth four points on the par five ninth and his total could have been greater but for a non-event at the 11th hole.

John Brown (9) won the best gross with a total of six over par 74 shots.

His card was made up of 10 pars, seven bogeys and he finished off his round with a birdie three on the final hole for equal nines of three over par.

LADIES

Zandra Douglas and Roisin Quigley are off to Royal County Down after winning the Daisy Ferguson Greensomes Stableford event at Ballymena Golf Club last week.

The pair accumulated 38 points around the Raceview Road course to finish two clear of their nearest rivals, and runners-up, Sandra Lennox and Arlene McCartney.

The winning duo will represent the club in the finals at the Annesley Course at Royal County Down last in the summer.
