Christopher wins Rose Bowl at Lambeg

CHRISTOPHER Maguire (20) won the last ‘Major’ of the season at Lambeg with a magnificent score of 59 net, 7 under par for the course.

The stroke competition was for the “Rose Bowl” and was sponsored by Laganview Driving Range.

Although Christopher scored a birdie and two pars in the front nine he also managed a couple of double bogeys and four single bogeys to give him a net 31 at the turn. An eight on the tenth and a double bogey at the par three 12 didn’t help but things were to improve dramatically when he scored two pars and two brilliant birdies in the run-in to leave him on 79 gross and the winning score. Brian Mc Gonigle (19) finished one shot behind on 60 net. Brian got off to a dream start with a birdie at the first and two single bogeys at two and three. Three pars in a row put him -5 after six but a double bogey on the next set him back. Another brilliant birdie and a single bogey brought him back to -6 at the turn and sitting in a great position. With only two pars and three double bogeys in the back nine he was unable to improve his score but was enough to take the runner-up prize. Third place was won by Darren Mc Shane (15) with a net 61 (-5). Darren got off to a terrible start with a single bogey at the first followed by two double bogeys, but he finished the front nine with four pars and two single bogeys to bring him right back into contention sitting on level par. The back nine was much better with three single bogeys and five pars to finish on 76 gross. Best Gross was won by Alan Crockard (6) with total of 68.

The final of the Lambeg Match-Play competition took place during the week between last year’s winner, Tommy Coulter (11) and Paul Flannaghan(20) but it was Paul who took the honours with a magnificent 5 and 3 victory. Although both players played magnificent golf, the nine shot advantage to Paul proved to much for Tommy and after going two down early in the match he was always chasing the game.
