Clean sweep for Rossmore Cup team

Team captain, Mel Hylands, was naturally delighted but he knows that the match is far from over.

David Cherry and Richard Coburn won 5 and 4.

Joe Glass and Sherwin Curran won 3 and 2.

Kevin McKay and Brian Grimes won 3 and 2.

P.J. Johnston and Fergie Cosgrove won 2 and 1.

4-nil sounds great but it is quite likely that Ardglass will win 4-0 over their own course. It could all be decided on holes up. Banbridge are 13 holes up after the first leg and that is a strong position. Mel’s team should win, they just need to avoid complacency.

The second leg will be played on June 29.

Ian Boyce is top scorer

The third round of the Mid-Ulster Senior Alliance was played at Lisburn Golf Club last Monday.

Lisburn is a beautiful course but it is long and the greens are always very fast and treacherous. The Banbridge team found it far from easy.

Ian Boyce, the most experienced player on the team, played superbly to score 36 points.

Seamus McGrath, who will be getting on his bike soon to cycle from London to Paris, had the next best score, 34 points.

Peter Hillen, who plays golf almost every day and never seems to tire, managed to get 32 points.

Another big score was needed but it did not materialise. Dougie Stevenson, the team captain, was surprised when his 28 points featured in the top four scores.

A total team score of 140 points will not push Banbridge up the league table. But all is not lost because the fourth round is at home and four scores in the 40’s would put Banbridge right back into contention.

The other four players at Lisburn were Fergie Cosgrove, Sydney Pepper, Tony Ewbanks and John Poots.
