Close finish to the Sam Rutherford Cup match

BANBRIDGE played Spa in the home leg of their first round match in the Sam Rutherford Cup last Sunday.

P. J. Johnston was captain and he put together what looked like a very strong team. As it turned out, Spa were equally strong.

The format in this competition is greensomes with matches decided by holes up after 18 holes.

Chris McAvoy and Shane McCrory got proceedings off to the perfect start when they beat Colin Hayes and Colin Morrison by five holes up.

William Malcolmson and Brian Mulholland lost by one hole against Michael Morgan and Gareth Teggart.

Garreth Moody and Shane Rooney lost by two holes against the father and son partnership of Robert and Greg Stevenson.

Seamus Rooney and Tom Fee beat Mark Robinson and Simon Aiken one hole up.

Banbridge finished three holes up. This is a very narrow lead to take to Spa next Saturday for the second leg. But, as always, hope springs eternal.
