Cochrane claims Roe Scratch Cup

SERIOUS golfers from around the North West gathered at Roe Park on Sunday to play for the Scratch Cup, sponsored by Limavady Printing Company.

The conditions were less than favourable to low scoring, with many golfers hitting drivers at two of the par threes. The 36 hole format saw a local golfer triumph amid the tempestuous winds.

Ricky Cochrane, a previous winner in 2007, produced two consistent and controlled rounds of 75 to lead the field by two shots when all the scores were tallied.

Ricky will prove to be an exceptionally popular winner, combining modesty with good grace, and his result made all the more special as his golfing career was almost cut short last season, quite literally!

Damien McKenna from Foyle GC and Colin Starlett from North West Golf Club took second and third respectively, with both recording a gross 152, with Damien claiming second with a better final eighteen.

The best nett result on the day was Shane Bonner who carded a nett 144 to take that prize. Colly McCloskey, formerly of Roe Park and now of Castlerock took the best gross prize for the first round with a 77, whilst his Castlerock compatriot took the plaudits for the best gross second round, a 74.

Two Roe Park golfers took the nett awards for the two rounds with John Holmes taking the first round and Sean McKeever the second.

Captain Noel McClarey was quick to praise the many individuals who made the day a success and had a special word of thanks to the sponsors from Limavady Printing Company.

The greenkeepers had the course in great condition again and the wind only added to the test presented to the golfers. The staff at the golf club again did all they could to help and wish Robert, for whom Sunday was his last day, every success in the future.

Saturday's stableford was again contested in conditions far removed from the season, with local triathlete Iain O'Kane finding himself ahead of the pack with 42 points.

Andy Young further pressed his claim for the Golfer of the Year award with a more than credible second place on 40 points, whilst Brian Cooper stepped up his sporting pace following appearances for Glack over 35's to take third on 39 points.

The singles matchplay is reaching the final stages with Joe O'Neill due to face John McKay in one semi-final, whilst Martin Butcher squares up to Iain O'Kane in the other.

The doubles competition too is reaching its climax with James McGuinness and Ross McMullan looking to overturn John McCloskey and James McGonagle, whilst the generations clash in the other semi as Malcolm Stuart and Philip McKeever concede just a few years to Conor Kelly and Sean McKeever.

Next Saturday sees President Nelson McGonagle hold his President's Day around the course, with the presentation dinner taking place on the Sunday evening.

Meanwhile in the Roe Park Ladies competitions in August Marie McGuigan (14) with 41 points claimed the First Trust Trophy, second was Ita O'Connor (14) after she scored 39 points and Bernie Lowry (22) with 37 points was third.
