Coleman takes honours in second week of Galgorm Winter League

In Division 1 after three Michael Alexander (2) and Philip Galloway (5) were leading John Rainey (4), Patrick Coleman (4) and David Halliday (4) by one, two and three points respectively.

Through Beechers after a run ofthree pars Alexander had opened up a lead of two points over an improving Coleman with two pars and a birdie.

Alexander finished with three pars and was joined by Coleman (par, bogey, birdie) and Rainey (birdie, par, par) and with a better last six first place went to Coleman with Rainey taking second place with a better last six. Alexander won the Gross.

A point behind came Galloway (three pars) and Halliday (par, bogey, birdie) and with a better last six Halliday claimed third place.

Through the Trout Hole in Division 2 Malachy Kyne (9) held a one point advantage over Neil Fitzsimmons (7) and Chris Cooke (7). Michael Nesbitt (7) (‘ding’ at twelve) was two further points behind and Aidan Donnelly (7) after opening with two ‘dings’ and a par was a further point behind.

Approaching the sixteenth tee Cooke after two pars and a birdie had moved into the lead by one point from Kyne (two pars and a bogey). Fitzsimmons (two pars and a bogey) was a further point behind. Nesbitt (par, bogey, par) was another two points behind followed by Donnelly (double bogey, par, par) two more points behind.

Cooke who was still leading by a point with two holes left lost his chance of winning after failing to score over the closing two holes. Kyne came home par, bogey, par to win by three points from Fitzsimmoms (bogey, bogey, par).

Cooke, Nesbitt (bogey, par, par) and Donnelly with a late effort (birdeie, bogey, birdie finished together one point behind Fitzsimmons. Donnelly with a better last six took third place.

Raymond Steele (10) was a point ahead of William Kennedy (9) after the opening three holes in Division 3. A quartet of players – Ian Manson (10), Philip Magill (10), Timothy Roddy (12) and Robin Deane (11) – were another point behind with Jim Millar (9) a fuyrther two points down.

There was a change in the front runners through Beechers. Deane had moved into a two point advantage over Manson, Magill and Roddy with Steele a further point down.

Deane lost his chance of winning when he ran into bogey trouble over the closing holes.

Manson with a par, bogey, par finish and Magill (bogey, birdie, bogey) came home together and with a better last one Manson took first place with Magill second. Third place went to Millar with a better last six.

Twos were recorded by P.Hughes; R.Deane; A.McGillian and J.McGrath.

FRONT NINE

Bernie Frayne (10) won the front nine competition by one point from Tony Carroll (6) and David STirling Junior.
