Damian makes handicap count in midweek sweep

With the light now deteriorating 80 golfers managed to compete in this traditional Wednesday Sweep. When the cards were collated some 13 golfers had submitted under par returns.

The main prize went to Damian Catney. The 27 handicapper took the honours with a very respectable effort of 41 points. In spite of eight double bogeys on his card Damian used his handicap well to secure this more than useful score. Over the round pars at holes four, eight, ten and twelve were his most influential scores. A string of net pars moved his score upwards and he finished a point clear of two pursuers.

Runner up was Timothy Cummins with his effort of 40 points. The four handicap golfer had a mixed bag of scores on the opening nine. He birdied holes three and four and had pars on five other holes. He took a bogey on the fifth and had a no return on the ninth. He played the back nine in a fighting 34 shots. More birdies came his way on holes twelve and thirteen. His only blip was a bogey on the fifteenth. Pars were his lot on the remaining holes.

Another score of 40 points provided Bobby Creaney with the third net prize. This thirteen handicapper played solidly on the respective nines. Par figures at holes two, three, four, five, eight and nine provided the early bliss. He completed this tidy round with more pars on holes ten, twelve, thirteen, fifteen and eighteen.

Young Eamon Lynch nabbed fourth spot with a score of 39 points. This six handicap golfer was well in the mix through nine holes with a birdie on the eighth and pars at holes three, four, six and nine. He covered the back nine in level par thanks to two birdies, two bogeys and five pars. Holes ten and twelve yielded the birdies whilst his bogeys came at holes eleven and sixteen.

Two handicapper Francie Tallon won the gross award. Francie shot 35 gross points to land the award. On the way around he birdied holes five and nine. On the debit side he had bogeys on holes three, seven and eighteen. Pars on the rest of the holes guided him safely home.
