DANIEL TAKES EWEN LOWRY CUP

It took another high score, 46 points, to win the Ewen Lowry Cup at Portstewart GC at the weekend.

This was carded by 23 handicapper Daniel Douglas. He scored 22 points for the front nine with four coming at the index one fifth. He went one better on the inward nine by scoring two four pointers, the eleventh and seventeenth, for a cup clinching 24 back.

Brian McCafferty was the man who suffered as, with a tally of 45 to his name, he would have been more than hopeful of a win. Off fifteen Brian made a great start with four of the first five holes being parred. The end of the opening nine wasn’t too shabby either, with the eighth and ninth both birdied. 26 points was the result of all that but the streak came to a halt when Brian uncharacteristically blanked the tenth, maybe the curse of the stop at the hut?

He recovered his equilibrium quickly with another run of pars to fifteen and ran out with 19 to add to the card, 45 overall. Phillip McAuley took the Low Section for his 41 point return. A birdie at seven helping him to 20 points for the opening nine he kept up the good scoring on the inward half. A two at fifteen and a four four finish adding up to 21 back and 41 total. High section winner was Bob Cummings with 44 points.

The two par fives on the front nine were played in three under par, with an eagle three coming at the seventh, to help Bob to 25 points out. More remarkable as he did not score at the eighth! The back nine was a bit more sedate with no more birdies or eagles but a couple of double bogies near the end restricting the score for the nine to 19.

Chris Barber returned a gross of 70 for the Best Gross. He logged birdies at both par fives and got a two at the third before adding another with a three at the ninth to be out in 34, two under par. Nine straight pars got him round in two under for his prize.
