Darren does enough to take victory in the Masters Weekend Stableford

In cold but dry conditions, over 200 competitors took part in the first qualifying competition of the new season at Lisburn Golf Club.

Darren Welsh (12) won the Masters Weekend Stableford with 39 points.

He recovered from an opening eight at the first hole to birdie the fifth and reached the turn with 20 points.

A birdie three at 16 for four points was the highlight of his back nine. Three players tied with 38 points: Joshua Clarke (12), Derek McAfee (20) and Graeme Kerr (15). Graeme had the best front nine with 21 points but a ding at the 14th proved expensive.

Joshua and Derek both finished with 20 points on the back nine. Joshua’s better score over the last six holes was rewarded with second place leaving Derek third.

David Scott (12) and Girvan Gault (25) were next best with 37 points.

Ryan Symington (+1) seemed sure to collect the best gross prize when he reached the turn in 35 despite bogeys at the fifth and ninth. He made a bad start to the back nine and came back in 42 to allow Norman McNellis (3) to win with a round of 76.

As many as 20 birdie twos were recorded with David Scott and Ken Burns scoring twos at the 6th and the 13th.

1st Mark Coburn 39pts, 2nd Gary Brett 39pts, 3rd Joe McCullough 38pts

After the heavy rain on Saturday night the course was closed on Sunday resulting in the postponement of the Ulster Cup match against Mourne.

FRED DALY TROPHY

As expected, Lisburn had a comfortable win over Ballyclare in the Fred Daly Trophy. Jack Shellard won eight and six while Josh Robinson and Mark Armstrong were called in when two ahead.

Lisburn’s District Cup team got off to a great start in their opening match against Rockmount.

Ryan Symington and Christian Kennedy won their matches on the 14th green. Chris Moulds won two and one while Norman McNellis recovered from three down to go one ahead after 16. He lost 17 but halved the final hole to level the score at 3½ each.
