David takes Silverwood honours

PRESIDENTS Day at Silverwood got off to a cold start on Saturday morning but with good weather forecast there were 250 players taking part in what turned out to be one of the best competitions of this season.

The scores recorded also reflected how well the course was playing after a lot of work over this last few months by the greenkeepers and all the staff.

The winner of the competition was the man on form this season having been in the top ten for most of the year, David Mulholland.

David playing of a 12 handicap must have thought it wasn’t going to be his day when he started with three bogeys but he settled to the task in hand with a birdie at the 4th and a run of pars to finish the first 9 on 18 points. The back nine however was what won the day for David going round in three under. The first birdie came at the long 10th, the second birdie at the par three 12th then the 3rd birdie at the par 5 sixteenth to record a back 9 of 26 points to bring his overall score to 44 and good enough to lift first prize.

Second place went to 13 handicapper Dessie O’Hara with a score of 41 points. Dessie had six pars and three bogeys on the outward nine for 20 points and six pars and three bogeys on the back nine for 21 points.

Third place went to big hitter Matthew Madden playing off 6. Matthew got off to a super start with an eagle at the first but bogeyed the next before he settled down and completed the front nine with 22 points. The back nine was of the same golf for a return of 19 points.
