Delight as the Rockmount ladies win Cowdy Cup

The 2014 Ladies Cowdy competition final was hosted by Edenmore Golf Club.

Rockmount Golf Club were up against local rivals Lisburn Golf Club.

The match played in singles match play rewards a point for each nine and two points for a win; thirteen points being the magic figure.

Team Captain Sue McDonagh selected her strongest team, Andrea Watson, Jan Lindsay, Maureen Entwistle, Pauline McWilliams, Leonie Power and Diane Patterson.

Andrea was swift out of the blocks racking up a six hole lead in the front nine, the back nine was tighter but Andrea completed the win and secured all four points.

Maureen, Pauline and Diane all won a point on the front nine. Maureen and Diane also won their respective back nine’s and their matches to secure twelve points leaving Rockmount needing only one more point.

When Jan won the back nine in her match the match was over and Rockmount Ladies won the Cowdy Cup.

The mid-summer like weather attracted a large turnout for Saturday’s stableford competition. Played on Saturday September 13 scoring was particularly good with fourteen players bettering par. Winning his first ever competition at Rockmount was John Little (27).

Despite starting off with two eights John amassed twenty two points on the front nine, this included a birdie three at the seventh hole which gave him five points at that hole. A further twenty points on the back nine gave him a winning score of forty two points.

Second place went to one of the junior’s; Luke McCaughan (12) he also scored forty two points. Luke was beaten by John’s better back nine. In the low section (0 – 11) Gregg Sterritt (5) had forty points to win the low section. The middle section (12 – 17) was won by Bernard O’Connor (16) another who scored forty points. With thirty nine points Paul Gardner (20) won the high section (18 – 28). Best gross on the day went to Jonny Patterson (2) with a one over par score of seventy three.

The final medal competition of the summer was played on Sunday 7 and Monday 8 September. Three handicapper Adam Foreman had a one under par round of 71 for a nett 68. James Madden (19) was second with a nett score of 69. Junior Cowdy. The Gents Junior Cowdy team travelled to Clones Golf Cub in County Monaghan for the first leg of the Junior Cowdy final. The team led by William Blyth set of early for the long trek to Clones. After the long journey the task was to bring a good result back to Rockmount. William sent Russell Jamison and David Stronge out first, followed by Alex Thompson playing with Fergus McCartney, Jim Madden playing with Roger Heasley and Sean Lawell playing with Colin Paul. Russell and David lost 3 & 1 before Alex and Fergus restored parity with a 4 & 2 win. Jim and Roger were involved in a very tight match which went to the last hole were they lost by one hole. Sean and Colin lost 4 & 3. The return leg is at Rockmount on Sunday September 21 with Clones leading 3 to 1 it should be a good match. Yearend Finals. The yearend finals were played on Sunday September 14. In the medal competition the overall winner was Christopher Robinson with a nett score of 70 beating his nearest rivals Niall O’Hara and Adam Foreman by eight shots. The Drumalig Cup final between Gary Gilmore and Simon Gray was won by Gary. The Killynure Cup final between Brian Heading and Ian Williamson was won by Brian Heading. The Killynure Shield final saw Robert Burns beat Dessie Reid.
