Dermot’s North of Ireland bid comes to end

Dermot McElroy’s hopes of glory in the Cathedral Eye Clinic North of Ireland Open Championship ended in gallant failure today.

The Ballymena Golf Club starlet was beaten on the final hole by Dundalk’s Caolan Rafferty in their quarter-final match-up.

Dermot had made a superb start to the game and was two up by the turn but Rafferty quickly levelled early in the homeward nine and the match remained close until the southern player won the crucial final hole.

It put an end to Dermot’s hopes of adding the North of Ireland title to the West of Ireland championship he won earlier this year.

It also means that the wait goes on for a Ballymena player to win the coveted title, with McElroy having come agonisingly close when he lost to Alan Dunbar in the final in 2010.
