Doherty produces the goods

THE annual Carlton Redcastle Open was played in glorious weather conditions over the weekend and it produced a deserving winner in J. K. Doherty who produced the goods when returning the top score of 44 points.

The winner holding a two points advantage over his nearest challenger Raymond Tracey who was second after a break of tie finish, while also on 42 points in third place was Pat Burns.

Gross winner was Mark Wilson who scored 29 gross points. The front nine went to Willie Watson who scored 23 points and John Comey also scored 23 points to win the back nine and Gary McElroy scored 36 points to win the visitors prize.

The curtain fell on Redcastle's highly successful Open Week with the popular Total Golf Open, the event again played in fabulous sunshine and it was a mixture of youth and experience that fought out the major prizes.

Damien Tracey, who has been a model of consistency over recent weeks, secured the top prize with a brilliant score of 44 points, four points clear of Willie Wylie while the evergreen Danny Moore finished in third spot on 39 points.

The gross winner was Owen Carton after he scored 29 gross; the front nine was secured by Richard McClelland, after he scored 23 points and the back nine went to John Murray after he scored 21 points and Foyle's Hugh Doherty, with 39 points won the visitiors prize.

Meanwhile the Redcastle Ladies Branch have invited the gents to play in a nine holes competition in the run up to the Lady Captain's Day this Saturday.

This week's competition is the Redcastle Shield (Stroke) which will be played this Sunday. There will be two draws at 8.30am and at 1pm with the prizegiving ceremony scheduled for 6pm.

Meanwhile the Ladies Open, which took place in near perfect conditions last Monday, June 14, was won after a break of tie finish by Gill Eakin (33) after she scored 38 points.

Second spot was claimed by City of Derry member Lucy Smyth (20) who took finished with 38 points, Strabane's Heather Mitchell (24) with 37 points was third.

The gross winner was Mary McArthur (17) who scored 18 gross points, Suzanne McGonagle (33) with 22 points won the front nine and Helen Brady (30) with 19 points claimed the back nine.

City of Derry's Ann McGoldrick (27) with 33 points won the visitors prize, Buncrana's Pascale Gallanagh hit the longest drive and Lucy Smyth was nearest the pin.

The Ladies Open presentation will be held this Sunday, at 7pm in the Redcastle Carlton Hotel.
