Doherty’s big win

TWELVE handicapper Kevin Doherty took home the top prize in The Foyle Search and Rescue Charity Open on Sunday at City of Derry.

His steady 40 points gave him a one point margin over second placed Jarleath Clarke (11), a man who has made a big impression on the prize list at Prehen lately and he says “there is more to come.”

Hard working “Friends of Prehen” stalwart Alastair Crockett (12) finished in third place on a tie breaking 38 points. Ernie Heywood (scr) scored 34 gross points for his category win.

The outgoing Sunday Society captain Alfie Kane (10) scored 22 points to win the front nine and Eddie Mitchell (15) also scored 22 points to win the back nine. Anne Wallace (18) took home the Ladies prize with 36 points finishing two points ahead of the indefatigable Veronica Burke (23).

While Mark Mohan (13) chalked up his third win of the season in the Weekly Thursday Open at Prehen last week, a very steady 42 points giving him the top spot.

In the process he has reduced his handicap from 16 to 10 and and the coveted single figure one is not far away. Hot on his heels in second place was James Kelly (4) who scored a fantastic 24 points in his front nine and only lost out to Mark on the back nine. He also recorded the best gross of 69 shots. Neil King (20) made a welcome return to the podium with a steadily compiled 40 points for third place on a count back.

Best of the visitors was Ruairi Moore (5) who plays out of Foyle with a commendable 39 points.

The ever popular Thursday Open continues on a weekly basis right up to October with visitors more than welcome.
