DONALD BAGS NUMBER ONE TURKEY

Donald Kenny was the Portstewart golfer that took the first turkey on offer on Saturday.

The 22 handicapper had 19 points on his card at the turn; his only stumble was for a single point at nine with a six. After that he never looked back and added four points at eleven to get well ahead of the course. Four more three pointers allowed Donald to gather another 24 points to win by one from John Taylor and Glen Lambert on 42s.

John took second place on countback, his back nine of 22 was decisive, and consigned Glen to third place. A slip at the second gave John just the one point but this was redressed with three points coming from the long par four fifth. Two good fours at the par five seventh and the par four eighth put John on 20 points, two up on twos for the outward nine. He had the taste for birdies after the turn, a three at ten to start with and the long fourteenth for good measure.

He was not finished even then as a three was logged at sixteen. His four four finish gave him a 22 point back nine and 42 points. Glen Lambert reversed the trend for better back nines with a front nine of 23 points. His opening gambit of a six for one was not what he wanted but the birdie two at the short third pacified Glen and he settled well after this to get through the front nine in four over par for a great 23 points. His good work continued at the start of the inward nine with a few three pointers but sixteen and seventeen took a couple of points back to leave Glen scoring 19 to add to his 23 for third spot.

A couple of no scores blighted the card of Richard Lawson, who scored 41 points to get the fourth bird. Apart from those blips Richard scored well with a birdie four coming at the long seventh. Richard was just five over par for the back nine and even with no points out of the eleventh had scored another 21. 40 points for seven handicap Paul Holmes secured the final turkey. Paul had logged two one pointers but the difficult fifth fell to a birdie three to help him to 18 points out. No further slips were recorded as Paul was able to gather another 22 points from a back nine that included consecutive birdies at fourteen and fifteen.

On the Riverside Course, Johnny McCartney came home with a massive 43 points from his eighteen handicap to win the Riverside Turkey.
