Andrew Carville had good reason for early seasonal cheer when his best ever round at Lurgan Golf Club last Sunday served up the double success of winning the Sunday Sweep and the Big Day Out.

Birdies at the 1st, 12th and 17th and bogeys at the 3rd and 6th meant his first sub-par round on the winter course and his handicap of 9 meant a staggering total of 38 points over 14 holes. Malachi stepped up on Saturday to lift the low section with 32 points off 5. Birdies at the 5th, 8th, 10th and 17th helped him go round in just one over and no doubt he will be hoping success will come around earlier in 2014.

Three bogeys and an NR over the first six holes for Roy Hanna would have convinced many ‘low-men’ that their day was over, but Roy covered the last eight holes in 4 under with birdies at the 10th, 12th, 16th and 18th to come second with 30 points off 5.

Morris Lyness will certainly be hoping his current form continues long into the New Year as he goes from strength to strength. Out in 3 over, he came home in level par to claim third prize with 31 points off 6.

Paul Dickson, Stephen McCabrey, Dwaine Hanna, Keith Percy and Laurence McGrady each finished on 31 points to just miss out.

Some of these were handicapped out of the prizes and became victims of their own success.

No prizes for guessing who won the gross as short-priced favourite Gary Clarke carded another round of 1 under to claim the prize.

The middle section went to Tony McCallion with 33 points off 12. Christmas has certainly come early for the impressive Dominic Hatchell whose last three rounds have yielded 42 points in consecutive Wednesday Sweeps, and his 32 points on Saturday gave him second place in the section.

Third place went to the very consistent Barry Creaney with 32 points off 9, yet another prize for a golfer who can do little wrong at the moment.

The high section went to John Menary with 36 points off 19. Seasoned campaigner Brian Bassett took second place with 34 points off 15. Tiago Souto has been playing some very impressive golf recently and he was to take third place with 33 points off 16. Chris Stevenson also had 33 points but missed out on the back 9. Also just missing out on the prizes were Jim McCann Snr, Kieran McCorry, John McCallion, Roy Bratchie, Tony Gordon, Stephen Hewitt and Bill Leslie.
