Dunmurry Fred Daly and Irish Mixed teams go through

FRED DALY

Dunmurry’s Fred Daly team have progressed to the quarter-final stage for the first time in more than a decade.

Last Saturday, they travelled to City of Derry and returned home with a 4.5-2.5 victory.

First player out Ryan Trimble, team captain, played well yet still lost his match. Chris Black and Peter Morgan, Dunmurry Juvenile Captain, had to play well to come through hard matches, both winning on the 18th. Ward Farrell, a very accomplished player, won comfortably on the 16th.

Duncan Fleming and Thomas Gracey fought well to gain half matches and in the final game, Ryan Peden, although playing remarkably well, was four down through ten.

Thankfully he continued, to play good golf to the end and got what was a very well deserved half.

The return match was played the following day and the team was more than up to the challenge with Ryan Trimble and Peter Morgan winning on the 18th and Chris Black, Ward Farrell, Duncan Fleming and Thomas Gracey all enjoying good wins.

Ryan Peden was denied an easy win, four up with four to play, when called in.

They will now take on Fortwilliam or Portadown.

IRISH MIXED

The Dunmurry Irish Mixed Foursomes, captained by Nigel Abernethy, travelled to Co Armagh on Monday night to take on Slieve Russell for a place in the quarter-finals against Balmoral.

In the first game, Tom Snoddon and Donna Gillespie lost on the 17th while Noel Magill and Janice McKee won seven and five.

Shan McCotter and Clair Ussher won the 18th with a great par.

When Peter McRoberts and Ross Boyce lost on the 18th hole, it left the game at 2-2.

In the final game, Colin Mills and Trish Rocket were one down going to the 18th which they won to take the game into a tie hole.

In semi-darkness at Armagh with a large crowd, spotters were sent down the fairway but the men hit great drives. Trish played a super second over the bunkers to the ege of the green and Coline putted to four inches which was conceded.

The Slieve Russell second shot fell short of the green and they missed the 12 foot par putt to give Dunmurry victory.
