Early starters escapethe torrid conditions

THE weather at Silverwood Golf Club was atrocious last Saturday with continuous rain from the morning and torrential rain all afternoon, needless to say all this week’s winners came from the early starters who had the best of the weather.

In first place was Colm Doyle with 40 points, his front nine of 18 points contained four pars at the 1st, 3rd, 8th and 9th holes three bogeys at the 2nd, 5th and 6th with two no scores at the 4th and 7th holes. His back nine of 22 points included one birdie at the difficult 13th hole, three pars at the 14th, 16th and 17th holes, with single bogeys at the remaining holes for his total of 40 points and a better back nine to win this week’s competition.

In second place also with 40 points was David Sloan he also has 18 points on his front nine, with three pars at the 2nd 3rd and 8th holes’ five bogeys at 1st 4th 6th 7th and 9th holes with a double bogey at the 5th hole. His back nine included one birdie at the 11th hole three pars at the 12th 16th and 18th holes and five bogeys at the remaining holes again for a total of 40 points and just beaten on a last six count back.

In third place was Kevin Carson again with 40 points. Kevin’s front nine consisted of six pars, two bogeys at the 5th and 6th holes and a double bogey at the 7th hole for a return of 22 point’s, his back nine contained three pars at the 11th 12th and 16th holes, four bogeys at the 13th 14th 15th and 17th holes with two double bogeys at the 10th and most costly of all at the last hole.

The gross prize was won by Thomas Smyth with an excellent three over 75 considering the conditions. This five handicapper went through the front nine in two over with two birdies at the 4th and 9th holes, four bogeys at the 2nd, 5th, 7th and 8th holes with the remaining holes played in par. His back nine was equally impressive again with two birdies at the 11th and 17th holes, four pars at the 12th, 14th, 16th and 18th holes and three bogeys at the 10th, 13th and 15th holes.

There was double celebration for Thomas as he was the top qualifier for the UKPCC competition for a chance to win a trip to St. Andrew’s in Scotland.

Fourth prize went to Niall Geoghegan who is in the prizes for the second week in a row with 39 points. His front nine contained one par at the 5th hole, two double bogeys at the 5th and 8th holes with the remaining holes played in single bogeys. Over the back nine he had one birdie at the 16th hole four pars at the 10th, 11th, 12th and 15th holes one bogey at the 18th hole two double bogeys at the 13th and 17th holes with a nasty triple bogey at the 14th hole.

The fifth prize went to John Fitzpatrick with 37 points. John had two pars at the 4th and 6th holes five bogeys at the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 8th, 9th holes and two double bogeys at the 2nd and 5th holes for a front nine of 19 points, his back nine included one par at the 12th hole six bogeys at the 11th, 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th holes a double bogey at the 10th hole with an ugly triple bogey at the 14th hole.

The senior prize was won by John Clark with 35 points.

The section winners were: 0-12 John Marley 36 points; 13-18 Keith Totten 37 points; 19-28 Brian McShane 33 points.

There were 9 twos on the day.

This Saturday was also a qualifier for the UKPCC competition and a chance for the players to go to St. Andrew’s in Scotland, the players to qualify were:

Thomas Smyth (net winner) 39pts; Owen Callaghan junior (0-12) 35pts; Keith Totten (13-18) 37pts; John Fitzpatrick (19-28) 37pts; Kieran Murray (gross) 27pts.

Additional net qualifiers included Michael Miller 36pts; Conor Hutchinson 35pts and Liam Mackle 35pts.
