Edenmore edge home in veterans match

The second leg of the quarter-final of the Des Gregg Memorial Cup, between Banbridge and Edenmore, was played last Wednesday.

The Banbridge team, captained by Brian Mulholland, had won at home by two and a half to one and a half. They set off to Edenmore knowing that the match could go either way.

Nobody expected it to be so close. All four games went to the final green and the tension was unbearable.

Peter Hillen and Jim Cochrane went out first against Stuart Rodgers and Derrick Jowett. Peter and Jim were level at the turn but then lost three holes in a row. They fought back with dogged determination and only lost by one hole.

Sydney Pepper and P.J. Johnson raced into a four holes up lead against Brian Gray and Bill Henderson. It was the turn of the Edenmore men to stage a comeback. Syndey and P.J. were delighted to walk off the 18th green, one up winners.

It was looking good for Banbridge as Dennis Lockhart and Tom Fee stood 2 up with 5 to play against Stuart Cameron and Bill Henderson. A couple of sensational shots from Stuart and a couple of uncharacteristic errors from Dennis and Tom changed the complexion of this game completely. Edenmore won it one up.

It all depended on the final game. Verdun Bond and Seamus McGrath were up against Tom Chapman and John Hart. Just like the three previous games, it all boiled down to the final hole. It turned out to be a heartbreaker for Banbridge. Suffice to say, Seamus and Verdun both had very holeable putts to take the match into tie holes and they both missed. It was cruel but such is the game of golf.

It was a match played in wonderful spirit and it was most exciting. Banbridge lost but they will get over it.
