Eric lands first win of 2015 at Raceview

The opening competition of 2015 at Ballymena Golf saw 10-handicapper Eric Smyth claim the first win of the year.

He notched 34 stableford points to win the 13-hole sweep by a two-point margin from James Allen.

Smyth’s opening nine holes contained six pars, a dropped shot on the par four eighth but he birdied the two par fives, the third and ninth.

This accounted for 26 of his points, having played the nine holes in one under par gross. The 10th hole produced another par but the last three holes each produced a dropped shot as he added eight points to his total and completed his round in two over par gross.

Second-placed Allen (9) had seven pars and two bogeys on his front nine as he amassed 22 points. He added a further 10 points over the closing four holes as he scored two pars, a double bogey on the 12th but against that, he had a birdie on the 10th.

Category one saw Paddy Kearney (4) record 30 points from his round of 50 shots, and that included a double bogey on the fifth and a triple bogey on the 11th, which yielded no points.

The other 11 holes produced four pars, a bogey plus six birdies, at the first, fourth, eighth, ninth, 10th and 12th in his level par round.

Category two was won by William AH Montgomery (9) with 31 points, which came via seven pars, five bogeys plus a birdie on the par five third.

Stephen Surgenor (10) took top spot in category three with 31 points. Stephen played very steadily, scoring six pars and six bogeys and he concluded his round with a birdie on the final hole.

Category four went to Roy Worthington (17) who registered 30 points from seven bogeys, two double bogeys and three pars.

The best gross card came from Dermot McElroy (+3) who played the course in two under par, 48 shots. He had 11 pars plus birdies on the ninth and 13th.
