Final match heartache

Banbridge are out of the Rossmore Cup, beaten by two holes in the quarter-final by Tandragee.

The Banbridge team were devastated, none more so than their captain, Mel Hylands.

Mel’s team had won 2.5 points at home out of a possible four. They needed to win two games at Tandragee. If they could win 1.5 points, then ‘holes up’ would decide.

David Cherry and Richard Coburn had a 100% record going into this match. They played really well again but had to settle for a half match.

Kevin McKay and Brian Grimes were on top form and they won two up. Joe Glass and John Crothers were up against a very strong pairing from Tandragee and they lost by two holes.

Banbridge were five holes up with one game still to finish.

It seemed they couldn’t lose but golf can be a cruel game.

P.J. Johnston and Fergie Cosgrove, two vastly experienced players, just kept losing holes, one after the other. They couldn’t stop the rot and lost seven and six to give Tandragee the win.
