First prize night for Lisburn ladies

THE Lady Captain, Mrs Sylvia McKelvey, welcomed the lady members to the first prize night of the new season at Lisburn Golf Club recently.

Despite a cold start to the spring, the weather has held fair for the early fixtures and the scoring has been good for this stage in the season. The first prize winners to be announced were those hardy souls who braved the winter weather to complete the Winter “Ringer” competition. The winners in each of the three sections were Mrs Maureen Bryson, Mrs Ida Ross and Mrs Mavis Falloon.

The first 18-hole competition of the year was won by Mrs Maureen Bryson in A Section, Mrs Kathleen McDonald in Section B and Mrs Lynda Dickson in Section C. The following week the Nellie Garret Foursomes were won for the second year running by Mrs Linda Symington and Ms Bernie McDonald, with 30 pts, narrowly pipping Carol McBratney and Hilary Bradley on the better back nine. Linda and Bernie will now represent Lisburn in the NI Finals at Knock GC in September.

The next competition on the fixture list was the Peggy Nelson, and there was success for Judi Henry 34pts, Hazel McNally 36pts and Margaret Weir 35pts who won their respective sections and will go forward to represent Lisburn in the finals to be played at Dunmurry in July. Last week the ladies competed for one of Lisburn’s own trophies, the McClelland Cup. The winner was Vivienne Walsh with a super 71 nett and in second place Noeni Bryars 72, with Maureen Bryson on 74 completing a hat-trick of prizes on the night! The winners of the 9 hole competitions were June Wightman and Emma Porter.

Thanks go to those members who so generously sponsored the competitions during March and April.

The captain thanked all the members who supported the recent away trip to Ballymascanlon GC and Hotel, where despite the weather, the ladies had a wonderful trip with some good and not so good golf. The winner with a creditable score of 33 points in miserable weather was Trish Neville who won on the better back nine from Sylvia Carr.

The captain then invited Vera Hewitt, Secretary of the Hillsborough Branch of Marie Curie to accept a cheque for £370 raised at a recent quiz night organised by the Ladies Branch.

The Captain wished the Intermediate and Junior Foursomes teams good luck for their forthcoming matches against Omagh and Banbridge respectively and commiserations to the Minor team who lost out to Kilrea in their recent match. The Captain emphasized how important it is for members to play for their club and how much it is appreciated; win or lose.
