Five star display sees Lisburn GC’s high-flying Ulster Fourball team through to the semi-finals

After losing 3–2 away last week, Lisburn won 5–0 at home to run out easy winners.

In the top match, Mark Jamieson and Jason Smylie were six ahead at the turn. They lost four holes in quick succession but held on to win two and one.

Philip Stewart and Barry McQuillan had a very close match. Barry’s putting was as sharp as ever despite a fortnight’s holiday. He holed from four feet across the slope on the 17th green to win.

Trevor Doak had one birdie but it took three from his partner Stephen Wilkinson to clinch victory on the 18th green.

Chris Davis and Michael Rooney were one down after 12 but won the next four holes for victory on the 16th green.

Glenn Cruickshanks holed a long putt for a birdie two on 13 to put him and Barry Cathcart four up. They proceeded to win by four and two.

Team captain Alan Gilmore was delighted with the result and now has the difficult task of selecting his best team for the semi-final match against Fortwilliam.

ULSTER CUP

News of Lisburn’s Ulster Cup campaign, however, wasn’t as bright as they crashed out at Castleblayney.

Rodney Osborne and Brian Houston were Lisburn’s only winners in the away leg, which left the scores tied at 7–7 and the home side won easily on ‘holes up’.

Team captain Chris Budd was naturally disappointed but praised his team for their efforts during the campaign. This was Brian Rainey’s last match for the club as he is moving to France soon.
