Four winners in the Scratch Cups

ON Saturday August 18 the members of Banbridge Golf Club were invited to play for the Scratch Cups.

There are four in number, allocated according to handicap categories. The scoring was excellent and the final results were as follows:

THE LOW SCRATCH CUP (0-5) - The winner was Rory Madeley (4) with a gross 67. Three birdies in the last 5 holes certainly enhanced his card.

The runner-up was Paul Magennis (5) with a level par gross 69.

Damian Weir (5) went round in one over par 70 and he won the best nett prize with a nett 65.

Others who played well in this section were Rory Leonard 69, Jonathan Shannon 73, Eugene Weir 75, Luke Woods 75 and Stuart Hunter 75.

THE BANK OF IRELAND JUNIOR SCRATCH CUP (6-11). - Lee Tumilty, playing off a handicap of nine, shot the best round of his life to win the Junior Scratch Cup. He was two over par after four holes but then played the next 14 holes in four under par. That gave him a superb gross 67 and a nett 58, the best of the day.

The runner-up was another member of the Madeley dynasty, Neil (6), with a level par 69.

John Russell (10) shot a superb 70 gross, a score which would win many a Junior Scratch Cup. Not this year. John had to be content with the best nett prize which he won with a nett 60.

Others who came close in this category were Kieran Magennis 71, Michael Young 72, Nigel Bryson 73, Garreth Moody 74, Scott Nelson 75, Gareth Magee 75, Seamus Rooney 75 and Shane Bell 75.

THE J.J. HENDERSON INTERMEDIATE SCRATCH CUP (12-18) - The 12 handicappers would have been the favourites to lift this cup but a very talented 18 handicapper outplayed them all.

Jonathan Kerr (18 now 15) started strongly with 6 straight pars. He finished his round in a similar vein, with 5 more pars. This all added up to a winning score of 77 gross. His nett 59 is also worth a mention because they don’t happen very often.

The runner-up was John Gallagher (12) with a 78.

The best nett prize went to Joe Thompson (18) with an excellent nett 63.

Stephen Orr was the only other player in this section to break 80. Stephen had a 78.

Luke Crory, Jim Minnis, Noel Cruikshanks, Alan Dale and Roy McAfee were not far away with their gross 80’s.

THE SAM McMILLAN HIGH SCRATCH CUP (19+) - Glen Buchanan (22 now 20) won the High Scratch Cup with a very commendable gross 85. It’s highly unlikely that he will ever win this cup again as he will very shortly be playing off a lower handicap than 19.

Glen started poorly enough, with 5 double bogeys in the opening 10 holes. But then he settled himself and he only dropped one shot over the final 8 holes.

Albert Morrison (21) was runner-up with an 86.

The best nett prize went to Robin Jardine (26) with a nett 67.

Three other players broke 90 in this section. They were Harry Burnside 88,

Michael Beattie 88 and Eamon Galloway 89.

Cathal McAnarney and Richard Huey weren’t far away with matching 90’s.

It was a wonderful day of competitions. Our congratulations go to Rory, Lee, Jonathan and Glen, the four cup winners.
