Foyle barbeque proves successful

THE annual Barbeque and 18 hole Scramble took place at Foyle on Friday evening and was an outstanding success with 22 Teams taking to the Ballyarnett fairways for this very popular event and once again the scorng was excellent.

Coming home in first place was Shane Bonner, Ryan Kerr, Stephen Powell and Naomi Hamilton, who finished with 55.6 points, second were Kevin Thomas, Paul McEleney, Nigel McIlmoyle and Sean Rankin, who scored 56.3, while Cormac McGeady, Seamus Logue, Mark McKeone and Willie Boyle were in third spot after they finished with 57.8 points.

Saturday's competititon was claimed by Gerry Harkin (13) after he scored 40 points, second spot went after a break of tie finish to five handicapper Kevin Thomas who scored 39 points and seven handicapper Cormac McGeady was third also after a BOT finish when he scored 39 points.

The P & L Electrics Golfer of the Year is now well underway at Foyle with Thomas Duddy taking an early six point lead, in second spot on 369 points is Martin Kivelehan, third is Paul McGuigan who is currently on 365 points, fourth on 363 points is Kevin Crumley and on 361 points in fifth spot is Jarlath Clarke.

Last Wednesday's confined stableford competition was claimed by Damien Martin (7) after he finished with 44 points, second after a BOT finish was John Jennings (10) after he scored 42 points.

The annual Total Golf Two-Day Open Stableford was staged at Foyle recently and once again the event proved a huge success with in excess of 250 cards taken out. The competitors endured a mixed bag of weather with the Ballyarnett course in pristine condition.

Kieran Bullock (21), an early morning starter on Sunday, returned an excellent winning score of 46 points and for his efforts will receive a set of Taylor Made R9 Irons while the minor placings were decided after a three way break of tie after returns of 43 points.

In the end, Kenneth Hughes (19) finished runner up by virtue of his superior back nine, while Christopher McCann (17) also with 43 points was third; gross winner was Stephen Martin who scored 37 points.

Day One winner was Mark Doherty (20) with 43 points; Day Two was claimed by Paul McDaid (16) after he scored 41 points; visitor prize went to Ballyliffin's Oscar Mailey (7) after he scored 40 points.

The back nine went to Shane Bonner (9) after he scored 24 points and young Laurence Powell (16) who scored 43 points claimed the juvenile section. In the Ladies section Margaret McCarron (26) 44 points came out on top and Margaret Killen (21) with 41 points was second. The C.S.S. on Saturday was 36 points and on Sunday, 35 points.

Meanwhile, Foyle entered the matchplay stages of the Senior Cup for the first time at Strabane recently when they played Portstewart and in a very competitive match before Foyle lost out 3-2.

While the Margaret Miller Annual Medal competition saw the in-form Monica Mohan returned a fabulous net score of 64 to win the Trophy and Monthly Medal on Thursday, June 24 second was Lorna Thompson (19) who scored 69 nett and Sadie O'Kane (17) with 70 nett was third.

Today (Wednesday) the confined stableford competition is down for decision and tomorrow sees the Over 50's confined competition taking place, on Friday the Open stableford competition will be staged.

On Saturday the Open Week starts with a ladies and gents Open stableford competition, which is kindly sponsored by J.K.C Specialist Cars, while on Sunday the open stroke competition (including a ladies nine hole competition), which is sponsored by Derry Taxis is down for decision.
