Foyle win second GUI Pendant

FOYLE Golf Club Team Captains Jackie Thomas and Kevin Dunn travelled to Dunmurry on Sunday with their Pierce Purcell team to contest The Ulster Final of the competition against Rossmore expecting a close and competitive match.

With high hopes of winning the club’s second G.U.I. Pendant after 9 holes Foyle held a slender 3/2 advantage with Tommy Bradley & Kris McMorris 3 up, Ruari Connor & Ciaran McGuinness 2 up, Kevin Crumley & Cormac Cassidy lead by 2 with the other pairs Kieran Bradley & Brian O’Neill and Jim McGrotty & John Coyle 1 and 3 down respectively.

As the match reached the 15 hole the very strong Rossmore team had reduced the advantage with Foyle going into the last three holes 2 matches up and 2 all square and down in one making for a very nervous finish.

Tommy Bradley & Kris McMorris gave Foyle the advantage winning 2 up on the 18th hole, Rossmore leveled the Match when Jim McGrotty & John Coyle lost 3/2, Ruari Connor & Ciaran McGuinnes gave Foyle the advantage once more winning 3/2, with Foyle needing one match for victory and the last 2 matches 1 down and all square it was coming down to the wire.

Kieran Bradley & Brian O’Neill came onto the 18th tee all square and played the hole perfectly with Kieran leaving Brian a 5 foot par putt for victory which he rolled in to the delight of the large number of traveling Foyle supporters.

Kevin Crumley & Cormac Cassidy were called in with their match all square giving Foyle the Ulster title 3.5 matches to 1.5 matches against a very fine Rossmore Team and the club its second G.U.I Pendant.

Jackie and Kevin will now travel with their Ulster title winning Team to Kinsale Co Cork for the All Ireland Cups & Shields Finals were they will play Royal Co Dublin in he semi-finals

Today (Wednesday) a weekly Open Stableford competition sponsored by P.F.S. Accountants takes place, while on Friday Mrs Jennifer Rainey’s Lady Captain’s Day takes place.

The Lady Captain invites all the male Members to play for he Lady Captain’s prizes for Men on Thursday or Friday (one card only). On Saturday the Different Class Men’s wear takes centre stage.
