Galgorm Castle contingent cheer on Rory at US Masters

GALGORM Castle Golf Club’s General Manager Gary Henry, past Captain James Mairs and former international footballer Steven Penney had a unique opportunity to visit the US Masters tournameny recenytly, as the guest of a member.

Tickets to visit the Masters are near impossible to find and can fetch up to several thousand dollars on the black Market.

The Masters is one of golf’s four major championships and had four players representing Ireland Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell.

Rory and Graeme made the cut with Rory in contention going into the weekend only to fall away while Graeme came through strong over the weekend to gain a top 20 finish with the leading Irish player Padraig finishing tied 8th. Bubba Watson run out the eventual winner after a very exciting finish.

Gary Henry the General Manager of Galgorm Castle explained: “This trip was the ultimate for golf enthusiasts.

“During the event we were shown behind the scenes including a visit to the Butler Cabin where the winner of the tournament is presented his green jacket.

“I have been fortunate to visit golf events throughout the world but the Masters is something special, totally unique in the world of golf.

“This was a fantastic opportunity for me to see the top parkland course in the world first hand and hopefully we can pinch a few ideas for Galgorm.

“The trip was also a great opportunity for me to meet some key personalities in the golf industry and discuss ideas to improve Galgorm Castle and bring even bigger events to Galgorm in the future.

“During the trip we attended a formal reception hosted by Tourism Ireland where we chatted with many American jouralists and tour operators. This was a great opportunity to promote Northern Ireland and in particular the Ballymena area.

“Assisted by the success of Padraig, Rory, Graeme and Darren, it was formally announced at the reception that Ireland is now the most visited destination by the USA golf tourist. 2012 is the year more and more visitors will come to Northern Ireland and Galgorm.

“The 2012 Masters will remain in our memory for many years to come and we look forward to welcoming the many friends we have made to Galgorm Castle and Ballymena,” added Gary.
