Galgorm Castle team exit cup after Donaghadee loss

Galgorm Castle bowed out of the Belfast & District Cup after a first round defeat by Donaghadee.

The Ballymena side looked to have given themselves a good chance of progressing when they took a two-match lead from the home leg.

Michael Reid gave the home team an excellent start with a 6 and 5 win over McBurney. Reid was 4 up at halfway and finished his match at the 13th.

Michael Dallat was 3 up at halfway and 4 up through thirteen before winning 5 and 3 on the 15th green.

Philip Graham was level at halfway and went 1 up after 13. The match remained close but Graham held on to win 1 up. Daniel Reilly was 1 up at the turn and increased his lead to 2 up after thirteen. His opponent won two of the next three holes to level the match with two to play and in a close finish Reilly won 2 up.

Jonathan McNeill and Alan Neill had a close encounter and in an exciting finish McNeill fought back to half the match.

Patrick Dallat was level through nine and in a close encounter over the back nine, his opponent finally won 1 up.

In the final match Colin Steele was 1 down after the front nine. Steele came back to lead 1 up after thirteen but lost two of the next three holes to go 1 down before finally losing 2 and 1.

In the second leg Galgorm Castle travelled to Donaghadee with a two match lead. However the home side proved too strong on their own patch and won convincingly 6-1 to leave the overall result 8.5-5.5.

Jordan Hood and Daniel Reilly halved their matches; Michael Reid lost 2 and 1; Michael Dallat lost 5 and 4; Colin Steele lost 7 and 6; Mark Dunlop lost 4 and 2; and Jonathan McNeill lost 7 and 6.
