Gareth in Girona final stages

GOLFER Gareth Shaw is certainly finding his form at the right time and is just one step away to landing a European Tour card for next year having survived the penultimate stage of qualifying in Spain.

Having already secured his European Challenge Tour card the Lurgan man is aiming even higher and booked his place in the final stage after a tense few days with a great final round seeing him through on the El Saler course.

Gareth held his nerve in a play-off and will now head to the north of Spain where a huge field will all be aiming for glory in Girona during a six day competition which starts on Saturday, November 24.

“It was all down the final round at El Saler,” said Gareth. “I played really well over the last 13 holes and had birdie chances on pretty much all the holes. It was a lot windier in the final round. I was delighted to come through in a five man play-off for four spots. I parred all three play-off holes and the guy that got eliminated bogied the third hole in play-off.

“It’s great to get to third stage and now I just give it a go. I am playing well. I think there will be 160 players and 25 will get EuropeanTour cards and the next 40 get a full challenge tour card. It’s all quite confusing. There is six rounds in total but only the top 65 or so play the last two days.”

Members of Lurgan Golf Club are following Gareth’s progress with great interest and they wish him well in Girona.
