George grabs President’s Day glory at Galgorm Castle

There was a large turn out for Ian Rosborough’s President’s Day at Galgorm Castle.

It was an enthralling competition and in an exciting finish there were no less than 11 golfers with a chance and coming to the 18th tee, two points separated the 11 players.

At halfway George Kernohan (19) and David McAleese (17) had a one point advantage over Patrick Bamber (4) and William Moore (17).

Another point behind came Adam Steele (8), John McCarry (10), Cecil McAleese (25) and Simon Kennedy (24). This group was followed by David Stirling (9), Michael McAuley (13), Ian McCully (12) and Robert Graham (18) a further point behind.

Through 14, Kernohan held a two point advantage over Bamber who was two points ahead of McAuley, D McAleese, Graham, C McAleese and Kennedy. Another point behind came Andrew McKibben (23), Steele, McCully, David Chappell (18), Moore, Ronan Speers (25) and club captain Ivan McCappin (20).

With one to play, Kernohan who had led from halfway, was still leading but by only one point from M McAuley, Chappell, C McAleese, Speers and Kennedy who were waiting for a slip from the leader. This group was being chased by McKibben, McCully, Moore, Graham and McCappin another point away.

In a nail-biting finish, Kernohan bogeyed the last for a one point win from Chappell (bogey), C McAleese (bogey) and McKibben (par) and with a better back one McKibben, finished runner-up. Chappell won Division 3 and C McAleese took Division 4.

Philip Graham (-1) won the gross with 40 pts. His card included an eagle three at the par five ninth, four birdies and 11 pars and Ivan McCappin won the Seniors.
