GOLF: Cameron wins Visitor’s Cup at Portstewart

This v par competition marks the start of Portstewart’s series of Open Days and is usually well supported. Cameron, playing off seven, finished at five up against the course and was just one hole up on the field. He went one down with a five at the opening hole but didn’t look back again on the front nine, winning four holes and losing none, finishing the front half three up.

Cameron used his shots well and added to his tally with a win at eleven before dropping a hole with a double bogey at the par three fifteenth. Sixteen and seventeen were parred with handicap shots and completed Cameron’s round at five up.

Chris Lundy was the man pipped by a single hole; he finished on four up playing off five. As Cameron he lost the opening hole to go one down but evened things up with a win at the long fifth. A birdie four at seven put Chris one up and he kept this advantage through ten.

A four with a shot at eleven doubled his lead and another four at the par five thirteenth boosted him to three up. Pars from there in gave Chris four halves and a win at seventeen to finish the day four up on the course.

In the Low section Mark Windebank, playing off four, topped the polls with score of two up. The par three third cost him a hole but he hit back with wins at four and five, the first with a birdy four, to go one up.

Seven and nine however were bogied and the front nine finished with Mark one down. After a half at ten Mark went on a four hole winning streak, a par four at eleven with a shot followed by a birdie two at twelve put him up on the course again. Both par fives fell to birdie fours and with just the one loss thereafter, a bogey five at sixteen he finished two to the good for his prize.

David Ferguson took a different path to the winner by taking the opening hole. He also logged wins at four and five before dropping a hole with a bogey at seven to end the outward nine two up.

A nasty six at the tenth was David’s only wobble and it was steadied by a win at eleven, still two up. A series of halves ended with a good birdie three at eighteen which gave David his High Section win.

A round of 76 gave Andrew Stewart the best gross prize. He was out in 38 shots and birdied the eleventh to help him to another 38 for the back nine
