GOLF: Desmond Motors Winter League up and running

The annual Desmond Motors Winter League at Foyle is now underway for the 17th consecutive year.

Teams of four 18 hole stableford event still proving to be as popular as ever with in excess of a hundred competitors taking part on a weekly basis with the ten qualifying rounds.

The best eight counting running until Sunday 29th November after which the leading eight teams will play in the Final on Saturday 5th December for the four team prizes on offer.

With the first round cards returned teams 19 Kevin O’Kane, Anthony McMonagle, Tommy Young, Sean McBay and 22 Sean McEleney, Peter Roddy, Martin McEleney and Paul McEleney having returned fine opening scores of 95 points hold a slender one point lead over the chasing pack.

The Ladies section of the League is a teams of three stableford event played over eleven holes and after round one Team 8 Anne Hamilton, Christine McCafferty and Margaret Killen having returned a very good score of 52 points take a three point lead over Team 2 Myra Gough, Lorna Thompson and Florence Rankin.

Week two of the Foyle Sunday Society had another very good turnout with some 70 competitors now entered for the coming season and on a fine day with the Ballyarnett Course in excellent condition high scoring was the order of the day as 11 handicapper John Coyle returned a three over par round for his excellent 44 points winning score.

Emmet O’Kane finished second with a fine score of 42 points with Damien Martin finishing in third place on 41 points.

Foyle Golf Club Captain Mr Peter Fallon on behalf of everyone at Foyle extends deepest Sympathy to fellow club member Sean Godfrey on the recent Death of his Mother May she rest in Peace.

The Desmond Motors Winter League and Turkey competitions continues daily.

On Saturday at 1pm Margaret Lapsley Trophy Mixed Foursomes In Aid of Breast Cancer Charity gets underway and the Sunday Society competition takes place on Sunday.

Meanwhile Richard Godfrey (13) with 40 points claimed the first prize at Faughan Valley at the weekend, second was Gary Devine (20) with 39 points and Kenny Hughes (16) with 38 points was third.

In the first week of the club’s Winter League, which is generously sponsored by Emerald Palace, William Street, the leader of Category 1 is Peter McGarrigle (15) with 40 points who just pipped Geoff Bratton (15) also with 40 points, in a break-of-tie.

In Category 2, the leader is Alistair Campbell (20) with 42 points who is followed closely by Terrence Bradley (22) with 41 points.

This weekend at Faughan Valley an Open Stableford competition takes place, a time sheet is still in operation and if the fair weather continues, competitors are advised to telephone the club house on 02871860707 to book a tee time.

At City of Derry, Paul Concannon (14) having blanked the tough 14th Aintree hole managed an excellent 41 points to win the Sunday Society competition.

Paul Monaghan (19) was a point behind on 40 points to take second place on BOT finish over the Sunday Society skipper Jim McCann (15) also on 40 points.

Saturday’s Confined Stableford competition went to Greg Oates after he compiled a fantastic 43 points over the long Prehen course, with Brendan Duffy securing second spot after he finished one point behind and club stalwart Alastair Crockett was third after he scored 41 points.
