GOLF: Father and son pairing looking for Buncrana title

The final of the 2015 Owen McDaid (Roe) Winter League at Buncrana Golf Club will take place this weekend as father and son pairing, Jim and James Caldwell battle it out with Martin McLaughlin and Sean McMenamin for the title in the qualifiers section.

And in the non-qualifying section Willie McLaughlin and John Porter will take on Benny Murphy and John Doherty, with both matches to be played on or before Sunday, January 3rd.

In the semi-finals of the qualifiers section last weekend, the match of the day was between the father and sons combinations of Jim and James Caldwell against Sean and Sean T Murphy.

This proved to be a very close match with some excellent golf played between the pairings with Jim and James running out eventual winners.

In the other semi-final Martin McLaughlin and Sean McMenamin defeated Liam O’Donnell and Barry Dillon 3&2.

In the non-qualifiers section both semi-finals were close affairs with Willie McLaughlin and John Porter defeating Owen Doherty and Ronald Longwill 1 up and Benny Murphy and John Doherty defeating Eamon Doherty and Shaun McMenamin at the first tie hole.

Meanwhile, there was also an 18 hole Open Stableford played last weekend.

The ever consistent Paul Eccles took first prize with 39 points on a break of a tie from Damien Doherty.

With Kevin McDermott (16) finishing on 38 points to claim third spot.

Back nine winner was Daniel Lynch (13) after he scored 20 points.

The new ‘Find the Joker’ is up and running again with a jackpot of €500. Lines cost 2 euros each and this draw is open to members and non-member.

Lines can be purchased in the clubhouse or through chief seller, Oliver Doherty.

The Annual General Meeting of the club will take place on Sunday, January 10th at 2pm in the clubhouse.

Meanwhile at City of Derry Mike Carroll (13) romped to victory in the recent Turkey Competition he finished on 31 points and had a four shot cushion over Vice Captain, Clive Brolly (8) who finished with 27 points.

Dennis O’Connell was third after a break of tie. The key to Mike’s success was a pre-round tip from club professional Sam Smallwoods.

Playing in very difficult conditions, Paul Glackin playing off a 6 handicap was the recent winner of the Sunday Society with 28 points over the 12 holes.

Second was C Grant (17) after finishing on 27 points and third also after a BOT finish was G Moran (9) after he scored 26 points.
