Golf: Hole in one joy for popular Roe Park Resort member

The golfing season doesn’t look like ending any time soon at Roe Park Resort if the huge numbers of golfers who turned out last week are anything to go by.

Gary Campbell continued his excellent form as he scored 35 points to finish second. Another in-form man, Charlie Mearns scored 33 points to claim third place.

Saturday saw the last Monthly Medal competition of the season with great prizes as always provided by sponsors SJ Mitchell & Co. Alan Dallas had a simply superb score of one under par gross 69 to give him the win with a nett 65. His round included no less than five birdies and nine pars.

Robert Godfrey also had a superb nett score of 65 but was beaten on count back and had to settle for second spot.

In what was a clean sweep for the Roe Park Probonos society, Sean Hasson claimed third spot with another great score of nett 67.

Ricky Cochrane won the gross prize with an excellent round of 73.

Derek Nicholl or ‘Tex’ as he’s affectionately known was having a rather ordinary round of golf by his standards until he came to the 17th hole on Sunday.

Playing partners Alan Rankin and Sammy Murphy went first and missed the green prompting Alan to tell Tex he had better hit the green as another fourball were watching nearby.

Tex didn’t disappoint as he played a fantastic 8 iron shot which saw the ball bounce just in front of the green and roll to the pin, ultimately dropping in the hole for his third career hole-in-one.

With the inevitable claps and cheers that deservedly followed Tex can now look forward to a unique Hugo Boss watch as well as a complimentary bar bill.

Up next at Roe Park is an Individual versus Par competition sponsored by The Market Yard and that gets underway tomorrow (Thursday).

The weekend also sees the club hold their Major Finals Day which includes all the team and singles matchplay finals as well as the Monthly Medal final.
