Golf: Kelly wins Captain’s Day accolade at Faughan Valley

The gods were looking down on captain McClintock on Saturday because he enjoyed the best weather conditions of the whole month.

Playing conditions could not have been more perfect for golf and this was reflected by an attendance of over 120 members as well as a large contingent of guest representatives from all of the local golf clubs.

Claiming first place was Michael Kelly (15) after he scored 39 points, second was Kevin Hunter (11) who too scored 39 points and third spot was claimed by Billy Hutchman (11) after finishing with 38 points.

The Gross Prize was won by Tony P Griffiths and Cecil King (13) with 20 points claimed the front nine and the back nine went to Paul Hyndman (16) after scoring 23 points.

Non-qualifier Prize went to Brian Gallagher (16) after he scored 39 points; Captain’s Visitors Prize was won by City of Derry’s Richard Ayton (9) after scoring 38 points; Cecil King (13) with 37 points won the Past Captain’s Prize.

Nearest the Pin at the 10th hole was Richard Godfrey and Marty McDermott hit the longest drive at the 11 hole.

The Ladies (12 hole Competition) was won by Evelyn Smith (29) after she scored 24 points; second was Marion Sayers (26) who scored 24 points and the Special Golf Prize went to Elizabeth Mullan.

There were nine “Twos”, but special mention must go to Alister Campbell who had a Two on the par 4 14th Hole to score 6 points and the overall winner, Michael Kelly for his Two at the par 4 13th Hole.

Members are reminded to check their handicap records as there were 12 changes as a result of this competition.

McClintock would like to pay special tribute to his family and friends who supported him by providing refreshments throughout the whole day from dawn until late afternoon.

Frank would also like to acknowledge the superb efforts of David Forbes and the green-keeping staff who worked tirelessly during the month to ensure that the course was in such pristine condition. Finally, he thanked the management and staff of the White Horse Hotel.
