Golf results from Ballycastle, Brown Trout and Kilrea

BALLYCASTLE - Christmas dinners continued at the weekend at Ballycastle, and Saturday’s strong entry saw Angus Iliff take the Division One bird with a total of 43 points, thanks to birdies at the 3rd, 5th & 10th holes. That was enough to get him ahead of Gerard Waide (13) who shot 42 points in 2nd place and Liam McLaughlin (14) who picked up the 3rd prize of 41 points.

The Division Two turkey was won by Martin Morgan (15) on 41 points, one point better than his winning score in last Wednesday’s Open Stableford. In the runner up slots there were three contenders who shot 40 points, but on countback it was Gerard McCloskey (16) who emerged to take 2nd place ahead of Terry McNamara (19), with Derek Bell just missing out.

Eamon McCarrystruck a magnificent eight iron to the 13th green for an ace.

On Sunday it was the later starters who got the best of the blustery conditions, and this was reflected in the winners’ enclosure. In Division One, Tony Connolly (13) had a splendid front nine of 27 points which included birdies at the 1st, 5th, 6th & 7th holes on his way to a 46 point total, leaving him 9 points ahead of his nearest challenger Owen Kennedy who was 2nd with 37 points. And in Division Two it was one of Tony’s playing partners, John Morgan (23) who took the first prize on 40 points, beating Gerard Butler (19) on count back.

The ringers and veteran competitions are hotting up after the first four weeks of the competition and full details are available in the members’ area of the club website.

* BROWN TROUT - The second week of the “Star Fuels” (02870868611) sponsored winter league was completed at the weekend. Members who played before the wintry conditions on the Sunday used their advantage to good effect claiming the top three places. Leading the way Robert Orr (12) claimed top prize with nines of 19 and 21 for a total of 40 points. Robert played steady with eleven pars and his only blemish was a double bogey at the 4th. Tom Boyd (7) got off to the best possible start with a birdie at the first hole to claim runner-up place on countback with nines of 21 and 18 just edging Ronnie Engall (17) into third place with nines of 22 and 17. The highlight of Ronnie’s round were birdies at holes 8 & 15 which helped to make up for failing to score at the 4th. & 11th. The twos kitty was shared by Trevor Cupples and Ronnie Milliken. In the Team section the team Doubles with 79 points claimed the six points with team captain Tom Boyd scoring 39 and Robert Orr adding 40. Team Anthracite were awarded five points for finishing second with 72 points, Mark Dempsey best with 37 and Sam Reid adding 35.There was a two-way tie with 71 points each for next two places with the best third card separating them, team Paraffin took the four points thanks to Ronnie Milliken’s 36 and Ryan Smyth adding 35. Phurnacite got the four league points with Ronnie Engall 39 and Lyle Harris weighing in with 32. The last two places were also separated by best third card Captains Coal were fifth with team captain Johnny Kearns best with 36 and Club Captain Gary Hamilton adding 33. Receiving the last point on offer Burnglow also with 69 scored by Trevor Cupples 38 and Alan Smyton 31. Team positions after two weeks: Paraffin and Anthracite 10 points each, Doubles 8 Phurnacite 7 Burnglow 4 and Captains Coal 3.

* KILREA MANOR - The Past Captain’s Day played at the weekend of 12/13th October at the Kilrea Manor Golf Club , was won by Eddie O’Kane with a score of 42 points. Martin Donnelly was runner up , also with 42 but lost out to Eddie on the count back. Third place went to Tony Mc Lernon with 40 points. Tony also won the prize for the best front nine, and Charlie Hasson the prize for the best back nine. Harry Boyle was the only player to record a two , and that was at the 4th hole.The weekend competition was won by Jack Eagleson with an impressive 45., and the runner up was Dominic O’Neill with 42. They were the only two to break 40. Twos were posted by Jeffrey Marks, Dessie Gray and Pat Conlon, at the 1st, 3rd, and 10th respectively.
