Golfers come out to Roe Park GC

Huge numbers turned out this week at Roe Park to play in no less than four competitions including an open with some amazing prizes.

First up was a Club Stableford on Thursday which was played in superb weather conditions. Patrick Kealey played out of his skin to record an incredible score of 44 points to take the victory.

Paddy had 12 pars and a birdie which is impressive for a 13 handicapper.

Kieran Berryman had another fantastic round shooting two under par, scoring 42 points to take second place. Andy Young took third place with 39 points.

Friday saw The Macmillan Cancer Charity Day Open Stableford which had some amazing prizes on offer including a four ball voucher to play at Royal Portrush GC.

Always a hugely popular day in the year players from all over turned out in support and it was Alister Sproule who won the day with 41 points.

Ronnie Rankin from Castlerock GC took second place with 40 points and third place went to Shea Hogg. Willie Scott won the front nine prize with Hugh Murray claiming the back nine.

Trevor Thompson won the senior prize and Stephen Rainey won nearest the pin at the 12th hole.

The ladies first prize was won by Carol Crown with Jill Riley taking second and Valerie Gillanders third. Geraldine Kerlin won the nearest the pin at the ninth hole.

A busy weekend saw wetter conditions with a club stableford and an open team event hosted by Dungiven Celtic on Saturday.

Alan Dallas had a solid round scoring 41 points to take the win with Eamon Barkley finding some form to take second place with 40 points.

Eamon Butcher claimed third place with 38 points. Sunday’s club stableford was won by Mervyn Dolan with Dr Trevor Thompson taking second place.

The Pierce Purcell team travelled to Killymoon GC to play Edenmore in the quarter-finals stage and were beaten 4-1.

Up next is the second round of the North West Inter Club League as Roe Park play Ballyliffin away from home.

Having already won their first round match the team will have high hopes of reaching the semi-finals in August.

There will also be a Monthly Medal and Newtown FC will be hosting an open competition. As always to book a tee time call The Golf Shop on 02877760105.

While sramble master Billy Harkin beat the rest of the field last weekend and won the Redcastle Hotel Open by two clear points.

Billy scored an excellent 43 points with Barry Gibson scoring 41 points to claim second prize. Paddy McSheffrey scored a fine 40 points taking third place on a break of tie.

Willie Watson scored 23 points to claim the front nine with John Murray also scoring 23 points to take the back nine prize.

Danny McCartney scored 27 gross points to take the gross prize with Anthony Breslin making a welcome appearance in Redcastle scoring 29 points to take the visitors prize.

Members and visitors are reminded that next week competition is the Total Golf Open 18th – 20th July. All visitors welcome.

Meanwhile the following players have been selected to represent City of Derry in The GUI junior foursomes at Bangor GC on Monday July 28 - Lee McClelland, Ross Hunter, Aaron King and Adam Monaghan.

Mrs Marie Cliffords lady captain’s prize for juniors will take place on Wednesday July 23, prizes will be presented on Friday July 25 at 9.30pm.

Richard Burton (15) was best of the day at Prehen on Sunday, his 39 points giving him a long awaited victory in the open stableford that was played off the white sticks.

Second and third place were decided on a count back, Arthur O’Hara’s (13) better back nine gave him second place and Tony McDermott (12) was placed third, both players recording 38 points Michael O’Hara (20) Arthur’s Son had only 14 points on his front nine but scored a remarkable 25 points on the back nine to take the Junior prize.

Eamon McCourt (9) aced the eighth hole (The Crow’s Nest) in Sunday’s competition using his six iron and the feat was witnessed by Sean Coyle, James Desmond and Felix Healy.
