Golfers enjoy busy holiday period of competitions at Raceview

The first of three holiday competitions at Ballymena Golf Club saw six-handicapper Adrian Gough notch 43 points to win the Saturday sweep.

A first nine of 22 points was achieved via four pars, two bogeys plus birdies on the second, third and ninth.

The second nine produced three more birdies, along with three pars and three bogeys for an additional 21 points.

Second nett was Brian Logan (18) with a total of 42 points, 22 of which came from the first nine which he played in five over gross.

The back nine saw Brian score seven bogeys plus pars on the 16th and 17th for a further 20 points.

Third-placed Bruce McKenzie (11) notched 40 points with a strong back nine producing 22 points, which was better than Gary Stewart and Ciaran Martin, who also had 40 point totals.

McKenzie had five bogeys and four pars on the first nine for 18 points but his total was increased by a second nine of seven pars and two bogeys.

Fourth nett was nine-handicapper Gary Stewart, also with 40 points.

The opening nine of seven pars, a bogey and a double bogey yielded 19 points but his second nine of 21 points included birdies at the 11th and 13th.

That pushed Ciaran Martin (18) into fifth place on a better second nine. The first nine produced 21 points, and that despite a triple bogey for no points at the second.

The second nine included double bogeys at 14 and 17 but despite those, he managed to produce another 19 points.

The final nett prize went to Adam Brady who, off a handicap of five, shot a 39-point total.

A front nine of one over gross was worth 19 points and featured birdies on the two par fives.

The back nine included six pars and two bogeys but he retrieved one of those dropped shots with a birdie at the 15th for 20 points.

The best gross round came from Gary Black (1) with a total of one over par 69 shots.

He was two over on the way out and one under on the inward nine and in total, Gary had 12 pars in his round.

SUNDAY OPEN

The open stableford on July 13 resulted in a win for Thomas Dalrymple (14) with a total of 41 points, one ahead of the second and third prize winners.

Having been three over gross after four holes, Thomas was still three over at the turn, by which stage he had accumulated 22 points.

The first three holes of the back nine accounted for four shots of his handicap but he then scored six straight fours, four of which were pars, as he added 19 points to his total.

Second place went to Chris McCrory (13) who scored 40 points and his second nine of 21 points was enough to push Darren McGaughey into third place.

McCrory scored 19 points on the outward nine and that included a non-score on the par three seventh but his back nine was made up of five pars and four bogeys for 21 points, against 20 from McGaughey.

Darren, playing off 11, scored six pars and three bogeys on his opening nine for 20 points and then matched that total on the second nine, with a double bogey at 13 producing no points.

Sean McGarry (4) returned the best gross card of three over 71 where the lone dropped shot on the opening nine came at the second.

The second nine again contained eight pars with the only concession coming on the 14th, where he dropped two shots.

MONDAY SWEEP

The club sweep on Monday, July 14, saw Donald Smyth finish the top scorer with 40 points after the 15-handicapper scored equal nines of 20 points.

Second nett was Michael Scroggie (8) with 34 points but after scoring 20 on the outward nine, he could only add a further 14.

WEDNESDAY STABLEFORD

The Wednesday open stableford competitions now feature the 13-hole hat competition for the next two months and the winners must be present to claim their prize.
