Good turn out at final Sweep

IVAN Lavery won the principal net prize in the last Wednesday Sweep of the month at Lurgan Golf Club on March 28.

There was a wonderful entry of 110 golfers. Pleasant weather gave a lot of encouragement to this large entry. As usual there was some quality scoring and on this particular occasion some 23 golfers obtained under par scores. This represented about 21 per cent of the entry.

High handicapper Ivan Lavery won by the minimum margin of one point. This 24 handicapper emerged victorious with a haul of 41 points. A distinctly strong opening nine holes spearheaded his success.

Par figures at holes two, three, four, seven and nine provided this early onslaught. A pair of double bogeys at holes 11 and 14 and a triple at the sixteenth were a slight cause for concern. However Ivan kept afloat with numerous net pars and this proved sufficient to edge him ahead.

Gary McCollum was runner-up with a four under par effort of 40 points. This 14 handicapper gained pars at holes one, four, five and nine. A run of pars at holes 10, 12 and 14 got his back nine off the ground. He concluded his round with a trio of pars and this strong finish proved decisive.

Dwaine Hanna grabbed third place with an equally pleasing effort of 40 points. This 11 handicapper had a strong opening nine. He birdied the second and backed it up with six pars. Useful pars at holes 10, 13, 15 and 18 were recorded on the homeward stretch.

With a total of 39 points, fourth net went to John O’Neill. This six handicapper was well in contention after nine holes with six pars on his card. He was level par for the second nine. He birdied holes 11 and 18 but incurred bogeys on holes 15 and 16. Pars were his lot on the other five holes.
