Great start paves way to victory for Mark

WITH the schools off for Halloween the Wednesday Sweep at Lurgan had a few extra entries last week.

For many it was the seasonal trick but for those with the best scores it was a treat. Mark O’Neill recorded a super total of 44 points. This 11 handicapper was quick off the mark with a trio of pars and then a birdie on the fourth. He finished off the front nine with a par. Four straight pars was his excellent start to the back nine. A run of bogey, birdie, bogey was his next sequence of scoring. Back to back birdies on the closing two holes did the trick.

A score of 42 points enabled Gary Murphy into second place. Playing off 24 handicap Gary had just four double bogeys on his winning card. A run of pars at holes two, eight, eleven and fifteen provided the necessary stability. Numerous net par returns also bolstered his points tally.

The third and final net prize was taken by Kevin Brennan. The 13 handicapper took the spoils with the best return of 40 points. Par figures at holes one, five and six were his key scores on the outward nine. On the homeward journey he attained valuable birdies at holes twelve, fourteen and eighteen. Pars at holes fifteen and seventeen were his other marquee scores on the nine. This strong play on the nine got him safely across the finishing line.

The weekly gross award went to Francie Tallon. The two handicapper had a very appetising return of 39 gross points.

It had the usual mix of birdies, pars and the odd bogey thrown in for good measure. Holes eight and seventeen were the bogey holes. On the positive side he made birdies on holes three, four, nine, ten and thirteen. He covered the rest of the holes in par on his way to success. The other useful scoring was achieved by the following golfers:

40 pts: Bryan Turkington, Stephen Walter, Terry McCrory.

39 pts: Paul McKernan, Jim McKee.

38 pts: Jason McCann, Hugh O’Reilly, Paul McCabrey, Joe Dowey.

37 pts: Derek Johnston, Kieran Kearney, Conor McDonald, Brian Bassett.
