Grimes returns to City of Derry to claim victory

Former Prehen member and now playing out of Foyle Brendan Grimes (15) put his local knowledge to great effect when taking the top prize in the City Hotel sponsored Open Stableford at City of Derry on Wednesday.

He scored 40 points for a narrow one point win over Christy Long (3).

Christy is slowly returning to the form he showed some years back, the highlight of which was possibly his six and five victory over a young Rory McIlroy in a Fred Daly match.

Three players finished with 38 points, a break of tie needed to separate them. Aaron Taylor (1) was the best of them and he also had the best gross on the day.

Ian Dixon (11) and Stephen McKeegan (4) finished fourth and fifth nett respectively.

Cheryl Chambers (19) was the best of the ladies that played with a well compiled 38 points.

The nines went to Lester Moore (2), he took the first nine with 22 points break of tie and the back nine went to newly re-joined member Kevin Barrett (16) who had an excellent 23 points.

Play continues in the Open Week with the Chambers Concrete Team Classic on Saturday and the final event of the week is the Everglades Hotel Open Stableford for Men and Ladies on Sunday.
