Hartley pins down Greenisland Captain’s Day win

MORE than 130 members and visitors took to the fairways of Greenisland Golf Club to compete in Norman Walker’s Captain’s Day.

One of the few dry days of the season, the course was in as good a condition as it could be having weathered what has to be the wettest golf season on record.

A special word of thanks goes to Kenny Smart and David Winning for all their efforts to ensure the course was in tip-top condition.

The starters made sure the first tee ran smoothly all day and, as a result, the wait before playing the second nine was minimal but long enough to enough the free refreshments very kindly put on by the captain.

The week’s earlier rain was replaced with a tricky wind which, combined with some challenging pin positions, made scoring difficult but did not hinder Andrew Hartley who won with 39 points.

Second place was awarded to Dillon O’Neill with 37 points while Bobby Hagan with 36 points won the Council Members’ prize (and proceeded to tell everyone at dinner he had missed four 18-inch putts on the second nine!)

Gathering at the clubhouse for 7.30pm, the members joined the captain for a drink before taking their seats for dinner.

Thank you to David Alexander and his team for producing a delicious meal which everyone enjoyed.

There were very few plates left with food on them and if there was it was due to the steaks being too big to finish.

Before the prize-giving, Mr CT Hogg entertained the room with a great speech that had all in fits of laughter.

A great day was had by all, and a special word of thanks go to Captain Norman Walker for all his hospitality.
