Heaney secures win at Roe Park

THE past week at Roe Park saw two of the year's premier events taking place with Nelson's Charity Open Day and the Cheers Scramble both proving ever popular.

Nelson's Charity Day, in aid of McMillan Cancer Support, Chest, Heart and Stroke NI and Motor Neurone Disease Association, saw 320 golfers take part over two days, with 28 different clubs being represented.

The main prize of the day made its way up the Derry Road to Faughan Valley as David Heaney took it home with 43 points, pushing Gracehill golfer L Caulfield into second place. Anthony O'Neill gave Roe Park their first representation among the prizes with 41 points taking it on break of tie. Conor Kelly took the gross prize with 33 gross points whilst Stephen Loughlin and J Mulligan taking the front and back nine prizes.

Another Gracehill golfer, G Curran, took the nearest the pin at the 12th whilst Alan Loughery took the same prize at the 17th. The longest drive on the 18th was taken by Jonathan Allen, whilst D Black from Masserene took the same prize in the Senior Category.

The seniors were as always well represented with Bernie Weavers taking the first prize from Derek Simpson in second place. Phil Hendrick took third with Paul Cobb taking fourth. Wilfie Harrison and Tommy O'Kane took the half way prizes with David Bratton and G MacGuire from Castlerock taking the nearest the pin prizes.

This event, as well as other contributing efforts, is a major fundraiser for worthwhile charities and all those involved would like to pass their thanks on to all players and sponsors who continue to support the event.

The regular Thursday stableford saw Kyle Hunt's handicap continue to fall in the right direction with a 42 points result taking him to a new handicap of 8. Conor Kelly again figured in the prizes with 41 points and Ronnie Rankin nudging Liam Berryman out of third spot on a break of tie.

The Cheers Scramble continues to be supported by the Lapsley family and saw a nett 52.5 take the honours. The fourball of Alan Rankin, Tex Nicholl, 'Geordie' John Robson and Raymond McIlmoyle (Castlerock) recorded 10 birdies and an eagle (Tex holing a 7 iron at 14) on their way to victory.

Amazingly 11 birdies wasn't enough for the grouping of James Lapsley, Alan Loughery Richard Barrell and David Boucher though it did give them a 54.2, whilst third place was taken by a low handicap fourball of John Holmes, Andy Young, Aaron Kearney and Jason Thompson, who recorded an impressive 12 birdies and an eagle at 16.
