Henry’s brace wins Barbour Cup

HENRY McMahon (13) got off to a great start at Lisburn last Saturday in the Barbour Cup.

The final event of Open Week was sponsored by Lyle and Scott. At the short fourth he hit a seven iron to six feet for his first birdie two. His second came at the sixth where his six iron tee shot finished 20 feet from the flag and again the putt dropped. He went out in level par 36 but started the back nine with four bogeys. A birdie four at 14 and pars at 16 and 18 gave him a back nine of 40. After missing the final green, he holed from 20 feet for his best ever score at Lisburn (76) for a nett 63 and a handicap reduction to 10.

Iain Murphy (13) finished three strokes behind in second place despite a six at 17. Christian Kennedy (6) drove into the trees at 17 and ran up a seven. He still managed third place with a nett 67. Ricky Leathem, Neil Patton, Colin Hill and Keith Sterritt finished on nett 68. On count back Colin was placed fourth with Ricky fifth.

Chris Moulds had the best gross with an excellent round of 69. Ryan Symington was second on 72.

Congratulations to Thomas Jeffers who finished his round with a hole in one. His four iron shot landed in the middle of the green, bounced twice and ran straight into the cup.

At the prize giving on Saturday night, Lisburn Captain, Roy Stewart, said that Open week had been a great success. He was delighted to welcome competitors from over 40 different clubs in Ulster . The sponsors had been very generous with their prizes and he hoped the members would support them. With the inclement weather, the green keepers had done a magnificent job in keeping the course open and it was at its best for Saturday’s Hilden Cup which attracted over 250 entries. He thanked Peter Cairns for the many hours spent in the competitions office analysing the results.
