High scoring in Sean Healy memorial event

High scoring was a feature of the Sean Healy Memorial competition, played at Ballymena Golf Club recently.

The winner was 16-handicapper James McClintock (Jnr) who returned 44 stableford points.

Twenty-four of those points came on the front nine, which he played in two over gross.

James scored birdies on the first and ninth and in between he had four pars, two bogeys and a double bogey on the fifth.

Into the back nine, he scored four pars, four bogeys and a double bogey for a further 20 points.

Runner-up, a point behind on 43, was Alister Gilmour (12).

Alister had seven pars plus a dropped shot on the second and two more on the fifth for a total of 21 points on the front nine.

The second nine had five pars, three birdies and he completed his round with a birdie as he aded 22 points to his tally.

That earned him second place on a better second nine hole score from David Mulholland (10), who could only add 20 points to the 23 he had accumulated on the opening nine holes, which he played in level par.

Fourth prixe went to Keith Barrow (21) with the best of three 41 point totals.

But the scoring committee had to go all the way down to the scores for the final hole where Keith scored two points against one from John McElroy (11).

McElory’s closing nine hole total of 20 points was enough to push Denis Stewart into six place in the prize list.

The best gross card came from Sean McGarry (4) who played the course in one over par gross.

SPAR OPEN

The Wednesday open stableford was kindly sponsored by Frys Road Spar and the winner was 17-handicapper Carl O’Neill, who scored 37 points.

He won on a better second nine from David Smith and Adam Heron.

SUNDAY OPEN

The Sunday open saw Thomas Surgenor (14) top the prixe list with a total of 43 points, of which 22 came on the outward nine.

Second nett was David Black (13) with 30 points, while David Smith had the bets gross card with a 73.

LADIES

Barbara Totten was the latest winner at Ballymena Golf Club when she triumphed in last week’s Slemish Trophy by one shot.

She completed her 18 holes around the Raceview Road course with a nett 69 to see off nearest challenger, and runner-up, Evelyn Allen by the narrowest of margins.
