History made at Lisburn with first tie in the Law Trophy

For the first time in the history of the Law Trophy there was a tie for first place. This ‘flag’ competition commenced in 1935 and this year was sponsored by McCalls of Lisburn. Martin Lilley (7), Eddie Rowan (19) and Mervyn Skates (17) all finished with net scores of 66. Martin and Eddie used their six strokes to complete the first hole. Graeme Leeburn (15), Stuart Leeburn (7) and Norman Lambe (20) had four strokes to spare after net 68s. Graeme made the best use of them to finish one foot from the hole and grab third place. His brother Stuart finished slightly farther away and was awarded the best gross prize.

It was a bad weekend for Lisburn teams.

The Barton Shield team lost to Whitehead at a tie hole at Massereene.

The Jimmy Bruen team went out to Portstewart 3 – 2 at Moyola Park.

In front of a big crowd of spectators Lisburn got off to a good start with Brian Houston and Lewis Patmore winning by 3 and 2.

Chris Budd and Joe Gatt were level par when they won on the 12th green.

After a good start David Armstrong and Mark McNellis went down by 4 and 3. Trevor Hewitt and Glenn Waring were well beaten to leave the score 2 – 2.

The outcome depended on the match involving Alistair Symington and David McAllister. The match was level on the 16th green. Portstewart holed from 12 feet and Lisburn missed to go behind. Portstewart were lucky to keep out of the water at the island green 17th. Lisburn were bunkered and lost the hole and the match.

Glen Walsh praised his players for their effort and thanked Portstewart for the excellent spirit in which the game was played.
