Huge numbers turnout at Prehen for team classic

The Chamber’s Concrete sponsored team Classic attracted a huge crowd to City of Derry on Saturday last and competition was intense with nine teams recording scores in the nineties.

Best of these was the Alfie Kane led team with a magnificent 95 points total.

Alfie had Ken Quigley, Seamus Given and the indomitable Jim O Hagan helping him with big Jim especially playing a major part with twelve of his scores counting towards the team’s final tally.

Newly appointed Competition convenor Michael Carroll made a winning start to his tenure by leading home the second placed team with a grand total of 93 points.

His assistants on the day were Robin McClay, John Gallagher and the inimitable Shane Kelly. A massive 52 points on the back nine enabled the team led by Graham Hepburn take the third prize on a tie break.

Their overall total was 93 points and Vincent Devenny, Ronan Burns and Dan McAnulla helped Graham on the day.

Prizes for this competition will be presented on the night of the forthcoming Gene Fitzpatrick show that takes place on Friday, June 20.

David Bradley (14) could afford the luxury of two blank holes and still take first place in the prestigious Terence Bell Trophy on Sunday at Prehen.

He had 39 points with 22 of them coming on the back nine.

Rob Jefferson (13) needed a favourable tie break to finish in second place just ahead of Graham Hepburn (6) with both players recording 38 points. Ernie Heywood (1) scored 35 points to take best gross and Liam Lynch (13) overcame three blank holes to score 35 points and best visitor’s prize. Anne Murphy (18) made a welcome return to the winner’s circle to take home the ladies prize on 36 points.

Meanwhile Last Saturday’s Club Stableford at Roe Park, sponsored by Bonds Jewellers, saw sunny weather and superb course conditions providing excellent scoring opportunities for all.

Trevor Thompson made the most of it to take victory with an impressive 41 points. Andy Dunn played his best round this year to take second place with 40 points and Norman McMichael took third with 38 points. The gross prize was won by David Martin.

Sundays Club Stableford was sponsored by Roe Valley Veterinary Clinic and Cathal McNicholl finished on top with an excellent score of 41 points.

Second was claimed by Michael Mullin with 40 points and third with 39 was Kieran Doherty. The gross prize was won by Conor Kelly.

The prize presentation for the Spring League, Easter Monday Open and the May Day Open will take place in the Coach House tonight (Wednesday) at 7.30pm sharp.
