Impressive second nine helps William land David Marcus Memorial success

The David Marcus Memorial competition traditionally attracts a lot of attention from members of Ballymena Golf Club and this year’s event, which was played recently, proved no different.

The competition was once again kindly sponsored by Smallcost Carpets, where David had worked in his latter years.

The scoring was top-notch with the winning total of 45 stableford points coming from William Montgomery (23).

William’s opening nine holes certainly produced contrasting fortunes with three pars, two bogeys, a double bogey at the second, a triple bogey on the sixth, a birdie on the seventh and a ‘ding’ on the par five third eventually yielding 20 points.

The second nine was much more consistent with four pars and five bogeys producing an impressive 25 points.

William was two points ahead of second-placed Kieran McKillough (24) whose front nine saw him score a trio of pars, plus five bogeys and a double bogey at the fifth, which converted into 23 points.

The back nine opened with a triple bogey on the 10th and he went on to card two pars, five bogeys plus a double bogey on the par four 12th, which added 20 points to his total.

Third nett was Ronnie Mitchell who, having a shot on handicap at each hole, posted 42 points, of which 19 came on the outward nine. His second nine produced 23 points from four pars, three bogeys a double bogey at the 16th and a birdie on the 13th which was worth four points alone.

The next three places were decided on their second nine totals as Adam Robinson, Shane McWilliams and Stephen Russell all scored 41 points.

Robinson (20) had a front nine of two pars, six bogeys and a non-score on the fifth which secured 19 points but his back nine was much better as he scored three pars and six bogeys for an additional 22 points.

That pushed McWilliams into fifth place after the 11-handicapper scored 22 points on his opening nine of one over gross, which included three birdies. His second nine included four pars and five bogeys with his last three holes being two points better than Russell (6) who had a round of one over gross, which included three birdies.

John Robinson (3) took the best gross prize with a round of one under par, 67 shots. After completing the front nine in three under gross from six pars and three birdies, he followed that up with seven pars and dropped shots apiece at 14 and 18.
