In form Ethan leads the way at Silverwood

It was a strange day at Silverwood Golf Club on Saturday with the course not opening until 9.00am due to the heavy overnight rain, and with the front nine greens still with some water on them, it was decided to start the competition on the back nine first.

This did stop the members from returning some fantastic scores again this week, and in first place was Ethan Headley with a great sub-par round of 70 nett 65.

Ethan has been playing some great golf this year and his handicap has been falling down and he is now off 4.

He had a back nine of 35 with one eagle at the 18th hole, one birdie at the 6th hole, a single bogey at the 11th and six pars.

His front nine had two birdies at the 4th and 8th holes, two bogeys at the 3rd and the 5th holes and five pars to win by two shots for this ever improving junior.

In second place with another fantastic round was the ever reliable Fintan McAreavey with yet another sub-par round of golf. There can be few in the country playing and shooting as many sub-par rounds of golf as Fintan. This week a five under par 67 takes Fintan to a plus 1 handicap for the first time.

He had a back nine of 34 with four birdies at the 11th, 12th, 13th and 18th holes, one bogey at the 10th hole and four pars. His front nine of 35 included three birdies at the 3rd, 4th and 7th holes, one bogey at the 6th hole and five pars for a nett 67 round of golf.

In third place was Michael Millar with a nett 68. He had a back nine of 43 with four pars at the 12th, 13th, 17th and 18th holes, one double bogey at the 15th hole and four single bogeys. A front nine of 37 contained one birdie at the 3rd hole, three bogeys at the 2nd 5th and 7th holes and five pars.

The gross prize was picked up by Philip Mc Conville with a gross 78.

He had a back nine of 43 with one birdie, four pars, an ugly quad bogey at the 13th hole and four pars. He had a level par front nine, with one birdie, one bogey hole and seven pars.

Fourth was Gareth Magee with and nett 68, Gareth had a back nine of 43, with one birdie, four pars and a front nine of 43 that included four pars.

Martin Hamill was fifth with a nett 69.

The junior winners were: 1st James Judge nett 65, 2nd Dara Morgan nett 69.

The senior prize went to Patrick McGleenon with a nett 70.

Section winners: 0-12 Conor Mc Gleenon nett 69; 13-18 Michael Walsh nett 69; 19-28 James Nicholl nett 70.

The club held the UKPCC qualifier on Sunday with players from Silverwood and Loughgall golf club trying to get to St. Andrews in September and in the end four players qualified including Matthew Madden, Fintan McAreavey, Philip Patterson and Patrick Mc Keown.
